The Case for Being Lutheran

Bishop Mark Hanson speaks at the ELCA Churchwide Assembly in August 2010. He speaks about what defines us as Lutherans.

  1. Although a great overview of How God fits into ones life - does he really answer someone who is shopping around? If someone comes without much knowledge of various denominations (and that covers the majority) how did he distinguish himself, a Lutheran, from the UCC or the Episcopal Church? I don't think he made a really compelling case to distinguish a Lutheran from other denominations when someone is shopping around without respect to any particular denomination.

  2. I agree with you on some points, but I think it gives Lutherans a point to begin the discussion when we encounter those who do not know where we are coming from. I particularly like the point made about us being a church with "and" in the vocabulary... we are both sinner AND saint, etc.
